Your mindset can make the difference between success and wandering through life in a bit of a fog. Mindset can make a big difference in your development, your success and relationships.

I’ll be honest, my own success mindset wavered for a while last year. When I swam for Great Britain, The idea of winning drove everything. I needed to win, and I geared everything I did toward collecting treasured gold medals. This went on for 12 years before I retired from the sport at the age of 26.

Fortunately, as soon as I retired, I found a job working in schools, motivating students. I loved this job and, once again, I filled my days with wanting to be as successful as I could be. It was awesome…

But after about 4 years, I started to feel like I was going through the motions. I felt like I could do the job in my sleep, which is the point when the fog started to drift in. The challenges were not there. So, other than trying to do my job to a good standard, I didn’t have anything to aim for. This is how The Happy Journals was born!

As you can see, developing a success mindset, and keeping it, is essential. But how, I hear you ask. Well, here are some tips.

Be Realistic

Having goals is great! But, if they are impossible to reach goals you may become discouraged. Ideally, you’ll want to set goals that are high enough to motivate you, but not so high that can’t actually achieve them. If you do find yourself struggling to achieve your goals, it is okay. Just stop and assess the goals you’ve set. It might be that you need to simplify goals a little. Simplifying goals does not equal failure. It means you’re taking it steady, rather than overwhelming yourself. You don't need to do everything at once. Small goals tend to end up leading to massive success.

Challenge Yourself Daily

You may feel negative about your goals because you are not challenging yourself. As I said, I felt like I was going through the motions in my last job because I was already delivering to a gold standard. I needed a more significant challenge to drive me forward.

If it is too easy to meet your goals, perhaps your goals are not big enough. Challenge yourself, but keep it manageable. Find the motivation for success by working out exactly why you want to achieve your goals and finding ways to take steps towards them every day!

Keep Positive Company

If you're hanging around negative people, you may discover that the negativity rubs off on you. It is possible that others might be jealous of you and threatened by your success. Try to keep company with upbeat people whose excitement is contagious. If the people around you have motivation and inspiration, you will too.

Sometimes people who lack a success mindset are unable to see beyond obstacles. Surround yourself with people who view problems as challenges, not solid barriers.

Write Down Your Dreams

I find it beneficial to keep a list handy of all your goals and the reasons you want to achieve them. Look at the list whenever you feel overwhelmed or negative. Remind yourself of why you're doing this and what life will look like once you achieve success.

Take Responsibility

It can be hard to take full responsibility for all your actions and the outcomes. But, in the long run, it can be rewarding. Try not to blame others for things that go wrong.

It's not great to beat yourself up over things that go wrong, either.

The healthy way to handle things that go wrong is to take responsibility for them and learn from them. Try and think of these as motivational moments. You’ll soon see that you can improve and not make those mistakes again. This is possible one of the most important factors of a success mindset.

Live Boldly

Sometimes, a negative mindset can come from being too cautious. You may end up not getting anything done if you always need to have several backup plans before taking any risk. Taking risks is healthy if done sensibly.

If you find yourself being too cautious, you might end up stuck in Limbo Land!

Have Confidence in Your Ability

Sometimes, it can be so hard to believe in yourself. But to develop a success mindset, you must recognise your talents and skills. There will, of course, be other people who have similar abilities and skills as you. But no one on this Earth has your personality or has had your experiences!
