It happens to us all.  One day we’re motivated, and the next day we’re in the dumps having ourselves a pity party.  Staying motivated is not easy.  If it were, everybody would do it. Overcoming a lack of motivation is not easy. You need to believe you can do whatever it is you want to do. I guess that’s why you’re reading this right now - you're looking for motivation.

You may have experienced feeling good about a specific job or project when it began.  It filled you with enthusiasm and motivation.  Then you hit a few speed bumps and unexpected failures, and your motivation waned a little.  You may have fallen into depression and decided to give up.  All those positive, let's do this, thoughts turned into negative ones. I get it, I've been there.

We’ve all experienced these emotions that can cause us to give up before we've really started.  All that energy when we started a new project dwindles a little as dreams become a reality. Firstly, you must turn these negative emotions around. The best way to do that is to understand them, analyse them and figure out what caused them. We lose our motivation as we lose our focus, our confidence and our direction. If you can learn to control these three things, you can manage your life better.

Focus on what you want. NOT what you don't want (this is a significant difference). Be specific and be positive.  We generally think regarding what we don’t have, or don't want, rather than focus on what we want.  Don’t focus on your fears, but what you can do to overcome them.  Don’t focus on being poor, but on a plan to create wealth.

To do this refocusing, make a plan to get there one step at a time.  You don’t become the president of a company until you’ve come up from the ranks.  Focus on your plan to achieve your goals.  Be realistic about your goals.  Goals that are unreachable can lead to depression and an even more significant lack of motivation. Even achieving small goals leads to increased motivation.

Not what you lack.  I reckon you’ll discover you’re more successful than you think.  We waste energy by being jealous of others instead of working on achieving our own goals. You must create a day-to-day strategy.  Make a to-do list and do it.  Mark off each item once it’s accomplished and never mark something off unless it’s done. Unless, of course, it is no longer critical.

In the end, you’ll get tired of looking at things on your list and do it.  By making a list or outline of what needs doing, you’ll find ways to do it, and you’ll believe that you truly deserve success.  Don’t waste time by worrying about the future.  Start today by doing something to change your future for the better.  Today’s actions can create a better future.

Don’t allow a lack of motivation to surprise you or upset you.  Look at it as an opportunity to step back and analyse what you’re doing wrong and what you’re doing right.  Discover your faults and correct them.  Re-evaluate your goals from a fresh perspective, and you’ll feel a surge of enthusiasm. The motivation will come.

Walks allow us to take a break from what we’re doing and to change our environment. Which can lead us to new perspectives on whatever problem or task we’re wrestling with. If something you're doing becomes too hard or boring, you will start to lack motivation. A walk could help you remember why you're doing what you're doing.

Ask the Right Questions 

Sometimes, motivation and inspiration are just about asking the right questions, which can help to reframe the problem you’re facing. If you’re trying to work out how to solve a problem and you can’t come up with an answer, try asking yourself how a friend would approach it.

Also, instead of thinking about what you want something to be, decide what you don’t want it to be. Reframing problems and situations is a great way to overcome a lack of motivation.

So often people like to believe that ideas take the form of light bulbs or lightning strikes and that they come in a flash, fully formed. Actually, 90% of the time, the best ideas formulate slowly, gestated for days, months, or even years before emerging.

Often, the best ideas are not formed in isolation either but rather when we discuss them with other people. Even if we’re just thinking aloud, this can help us to see new perspectives and will often result in new breakthroughs.
