A catalyst can be an experience - such as an event - or it can be words spoken by another person. It could even be a book or a movie. Whatever it is, in this sense, it will be something that causes you to alter your life in some way. Some of these things could help you discover what kickstarts your personal motivation and inspiration.

My closest friend was staying over last week. She had to get up very early to get to work. I told her that I always get up before 6, so I would wake her up. This led to her asking me how I managed to stay motivated, working by myself and without real security. I told her that, above all, I trusted myself. But there was more to it than that and, I wanted to share it all with you, too.

Some catalysts are very simple - such as a man who gets fired because he’s always late. Losing the job might be a catalyst for that man to make sure he gets to his next job on time. He may even find personal motivation to get a job that gives him satisfaction. So much so that he never wants to let his company down.

In a case like this, the event of getting fired, caused him to make a change to how he lives his life.

Change is super hard. It’s easier to do what you’ve always done because there’s comfort in familiarity.

Leaving your comfort zone pushes you towards new situations. Forcing you to deal with new ideas and new ways of handling various aspects of life. It can be scary, and no one really wants to go through it voluntarily.

If you were to survey a ton of random strangers and ask them, “Are you happy with your life?” More often than not, the answer would be no rather than yes. It is a given that there are a lot of people who are not happy with their lives.

Often, people don’t like their personal life or their professional life. And they don’t like how they act sometimes. Yet, days and months go by, and they don’t do anything to change these things.

Some people don’t know how to change. They don’t understand how they can find a catalyst to find personal motivation and inspiration. How they can use it to inspire themselves toward the kind of life they want.

Sometimes a catalyst enters your life, and you’re too focused on the ordinary, that you miss it altogether. It is possible that you'll have to train yourself to watch for opportunities. Especially if you want to raise yourself to a higher level of success and happiness.

Change Begins and Ends with You

If you took a minute to look at your life at this moment, what would you think about it? Think about the people in your life, too.

Is it everything you wanted it to be. Is it everything you hoped it could be? What about where you are financially in life? Do your finances make you wish things were different?

Does it create a pang of hunger within you to have more?

What about your job? This is definitely an area where a lot of people are miserable.

But often when people hate their job, they stay in that job year after year. Watching themselves getting older and even more miserable. If you dislike part of your life because it isn’t satisfying, but you stick with it, it is likely to mean that you’ve settled.

Perhaps you’ve given up on the idea that there could be more. Ignoring the fact that you deserve more or that changing things is even worth the effort.

The fact is, my friends if you dislike parts of your life now, you will still dislike them in 3 months, 6 months or in a year. That is if you don’t change anything about it.

You will have lost time, and you may well miss the opportunity to make changes if you wait too long!

If you want more out of life and it sits uncomfortably in the pit of your stomach, it's time to take steps to make changes.

Staying where you are could lead to feelings of depression, sadness and resignation.

That’s absolutely not what you deserve. It is not what anyone deserves. Life is never meant to be something that’s just endured.

Life is meant to be lived with excitement because it’s an adventure!

Roadblocks That Get in the Way of personal motivation 

It is true that everyone is different, and I spend a lot of time reminding people of that. But all of us have one thing in common. We ALL have roadblocks that get in the way of what we truly want from life. Sometimes, barriers stop people from making changes. But they are able to motivate other people to keep going and find a way to get what they want.

You might have one of these roadblocks, or you might experience more than one of them.

A significant roadblock to change is fear. When things change, it brings with it new ways of life that can make us afraid.

We might be afraid to leave behind the rubbish job, for fear we won’t like the new one or the concern that we'll not fit in as well.

It is important to remember that one of the acronyms for fear is False Evidence Appearing Real.

Fears are usually based on "what if" myths, which almost always never come to pass. Make a vow to yourself never to let fear cause you to sit on the sidelines of change.

Another roadblock that gets in the way of change is a perceived lack of knowledge.

It can be difficult to make changes when you’re not sure exactly how to go about it. You might be branching out into something that’s beyond your scope of knowledge. But who’s to say you cannot learn?

Don’t forget that what you do not know at the moment can always be learned. Use educational resources as your catalyst for personal motivation and inspiration, change and success. It is possible to aim for new levels of knowledge that you did not have before.

Thinking that you cannot add one more thing to your already full schedule keep people stuck. Making changes always requires hard work. Often, people see the levels of effort required as not worth the payoff. This is a mistake, for sure.

The belief that you're "too busy" could be what keeps you rooted. To that job that you hate, to those messy finances, or to that relationship that’s sucking the life right out of you.

Learning time management and productivity skills can be a catalyst for a better life. You can clear out things that are wasting your time, making room for what offers the most benefit.

Being comfortable enough where you can be a roadblock, too. Maybe you’re not 100% happy, but you’re “happy enough.” All this means is that you settled for a life that keeps you locked in your comfort zone. Trading a full life for one that’s half empty.

If you’re not 100% satisfied, then something is missing. That something may be the very thing that you always wanted. But if you stick with “happy enough,” you may never reach it.

Visualisation can be very useful in helping you discover the changes you need to make. Picture the next level of success in every area of your life. Including finances, career satisfaction, relationships, health. Imagine, in vivid detail, everything that matters to you.

Take time to focus on how it could be improved and then start making a plan to get you there.

Perfectionism is also a pretty massive roadblock to personal motivation and inspiration. It’s here where people stall. They want the new situation to be perfect before they attempt any changes.

It can be terrifying and often we don’t want to take the chance that we’ll make a switch and find it’s not what we wanted. The same goes for people who wait for the “perfect” relationship before getting into one. Trust me, there is no such thing!

Perfectionism is the killer of change. Because what we see in our mind as perfection very rarely translates that way in real life. There are no perfect scenarios in a life that’s lived to the fullest.

There are experiences to encounter, and not one of them will be perfect. But, that’s okay! Perfectionism kills progress. Sitting on the sidelines waiting to get let into the game doesn’t get us anywhere.

Another roadblock happens when we wait for change rather than seeking change. For example, waiting for the perfect joint venture partner to come to instead of finding one. We wait because the alternative requires putting ourselves on the line.

For example, I know people who to wait to see if the person they’re in a relationship with will treat them better. They do this, rather than speaking up about the treatment they actually deserve. They avoid tough conversations because they’re waiting for everything to work out on its own. Again, it could be a long wait!

Change very rarely something that happens by itself.

Change is something that you have to make happen. You have to find the personal motivation and inspiration within yourself to make that change. And it can be freaking uncomfortable at first.

That’s okay. I always try and take that sign of discomfort as a compliment. It’s proving to you that you’re taking action and bettering your life, even in the face of fear or uneasiness.

Finally, the number one roadblock to finding personal motivation is a fear of failure. Many people believe that if they don’t try, they cannot fail, so they’re safe.

But whether they realise it or not, they have failed. Choosing to stay still in a life, which is less than they deserve. That, in itself, is a form of failure.

Your Mind Can Be a Catalyst for personal motivation and inspiration

You get the life that you believe you deserve. Your thought patterns lead you to make changes, to take action that alters the life you live.

Usually, when someone’s mind leads them to take action, they have become so upset with their current situation. Ultimately, they think to leave it as it is no longer an option.

In these cases, emotions will often reach a point where change is no longer an option. For example, if someone has been in a relationship with a person who didn’t treat them that well. They’ll often stick with the relationship until a catalyst fuelled by emotion causes a change.

One emotion could be anger. If the person you’re in a relationship with is unfaithful, it is often anger over the cheating driving the change. Even if it has been going on for a long time.

Believe it or not, your subconscious knows what you want. What happens is this real desire becomes buried, under what we’re willing to settle for. This is why so many people aren’t living a life full of passion.

You can tell if you’re living a life full of passion by asking yourself this question:

Do I love getting out of bed in the morning?

If you’re not excited about what you get to do when you get out of bed, you might need to reevaluate. I recommend this so you can find your passion and purpose.

Whatever it is that motivates you, is exactly what will drive you to wake up, ready to start and excel. It will encourage you to keep going in the face of barriers and obstacles.

You’ll continue on - even if you’re the only one who believes in you or your ideas. That’s why it’s vital to your success for you to get into a business that you have a powerful emotional attachment to. It is more important than people believe to find something you are proud of and believe in.

Face the Hard Truth About What’s Keeping You Stuck

Have you ever known someone to have a terrible health scare because they made bad choices in life? This tends to shake people up, and most of the time they will follow the doctor’s order to the letter.

They eat right, exercise, get the amount of sleep, quit smoking, quit drinking. Yet, for some, before several months are over, they will have slipped right back into their old habits.

The catalyst (the health scare) comes face to face with personal responsibility and often loses. The truth is that you have to accept personal responsibility for everything in your life. And I do mean everything!

The choices you make in life are your choices. You made them because you thought they were the best option at the time. You might have received bad advice that led you to a specific decision. But in the end, you were the one that made that choice.

You have to accept responsibility for what you want to see changed in your life before it can change. People who place the blame on others for their lot in life don’t ever reach a place where they’re truly happy. Regardless of the changes.

That’s because they see life as happening to them rather than them making life happen. Accept the responsibility for your mistakes. For your poor choices. For that awful job you shouldn’t have taken, or for that messy relationship that you wasted too much time on.

Once you accept it, you can move on. You can free yourself to finally allow the catalyst for change to work. Don’t let the past be a stone around your neck that anchors you to the place where you currently are. The past can never be changed. But what you do in the future is up to you.

Let the mistakes you made in the past become part of your personal motivation and inspiration. Part of your growing experience.

Knowing that you want your life to change requires that you take stock of your life. It means that you have to examine every area of your life. Look at what’s not been working to make you feel the inner satisfaction that you’d like to have.

1. Understand the things in your life that matter to you. Your catalyst for personal motivation and inspiration won’t be the same as someone else’s.

What matters to one person may be an expensive house, but that might not matter to you. Your priority might be financial security, or more time to spend with your loved ones.

If having time to do creative work is what matters to you, then your catalyst will be whatever gives you the chance to free your inner artist.

This may be something as simple as cutting back on hours with work or finding a different job. It might be the catalyst for taking art or writing classes. Whatever it is should be something that you truly desire. Something that you feel your life would be lacking if you didn’t have it.

2. Accept that you’re going to have to change things to get what matters to you. Many people are willing to acknowledge what matters to them, but then they baulk at the change.

You won’t get what matters to you without change. It’s like losing weight. You can’t shed pounds if you stay sedentary, eating copious amounts of calories. You have to be mindful of your movement and intake.

3. Give things the opportunity to happen. For example, if you want to start your own business, but your life as it is doesn’t leave you with room to learn, something has to give.

It is essential to open up so you can make room to let the change in. Maybe that means spending a little time after work on the weekdays to educate yourself. It’s a temporary sacrifice for a long-term benefit.

4. Make your goals concrete. Write them down. Share them with others. Find a coach or a mentor. Don’t allow this change you want to remain nothing more than a desire.

By naming your goals, you’re taking a step toward making it your future reality. Claim what it is that you want for your life. Then make a formidable plan to go after it, step-by-step.

5. Try not to let the size of the change throw you off your goal. Some changes that people want to make are pretty significant. Changes like moving from your home to live in another country is a massive change.

You wouldn’t want to pack up overnight and head out the next morning. You can’t throw away personal responsibility when a catalyst happens. What you have to do is focus on the things you need to do to reach that change.

If your goal is moving to another country, you would want to find a place to live. As well as a secure a way to support yourself financially before taking the leap. Those are action steps that you can make that lead to the significant change.

Small changes equal significant change, and they get you closer to where you want to be in life. Think about how often you’ve just accepted your fate – your lot in life.

If you’ve been watching time pass by, waiting for a bolt of lightning, consider this day your wake up call. It’s time to embrace every catalyst you encounter. Do this, so that years down the road, you’re not still stuck in the mud wondering why life passed you by.
