October 3

These days, in the world of planners, there are an endless amount of choices. There is also huge amounts of information and tips out there. So much so that it can be overwhelming. Even just the types of planners don't have just one option. Can there really be a perfect planner out there?

Looking for your perfect types of planners? I have tried hundreds of different planners. Both for research purposes and because I love them. I have daily planners, a monthly planner, list planners, and even handwritten planners! So, If you're a little stuck with how to begin, you're in the right place. Let's take a look at some different types of planners you can use. I'll give you my top three recommendations for each one, too.

I'm a little (okay, a lot) obsessed with planners and journals. I think that's obvious if you look at my website. One of my favourite things to do is opening a brand new planner and getting started.

But there have been numerous occasions where I have found what I thought to be the "perfect" type of planner for me but hated it. Trust me when I say, if you don't like a planner, you will be much less likely to use it.

"We do not all plan in the same way, and we do not all live at the same pace with or with the same daily schedules. That is why it makes sense that there are different types of planners out there to accommodate the specific needs of our individualism." (personalplannerforme.com)

A Personal Daily Planner

The first of my chosen types of planner is for all daily planning. Many people use their daily planner for everything, including work and other areas of their life, which is encouraged!

A daily planner is an excellent way to organising your life. Used well, this type of planner keeps you from writing out everything that needs to be done each day in separate places. You can have a system for putting all your tasks in, marking off the time each task takes, and deciding which tasks are too big or too small to put on day-to-day.

"You can never go wrong with a traditional daily and weekly planner. A weekly planner is a good tool for organising your time. These planners are good for your typical everyday life or work because they are not specific and generally can cover every aspect of life." onesmartfro.com

As I say, your personal planner will stop you from needing to have too many planners and journals all over the place, causing too much chaos. Those who find they need a bit more room in their work planner should explore the benefits of a personal planner.

Home and Family Planner

If you prefer using different planners or have a lot of family stuff to keep track of, you might want a separate one just for home and family planning.

When you have multiple people to keep track of, it's hard to remember which calendar goes on which family member's calendar. How many of you have been there? We all do, and it would be a good idea to keep a reminder on your calendar of who has what when. I know some people do this by using a separate daily planner for each family member. I imagine this can work beautifully but does require a lot of effort.

I would recommend using a dedicated family planner. There are some amazing ones out there. These can help you keep track of doctor and dentist appointments, schedule essential dates for the kids, plan date nights with your spouse, and even plan some meals. With a busy home life, you can fill up an entire planner just for this purpose.

Finance and Budget Planner

One of the scariest but most valuable types of planners I have is my financial planner.

I use this planner to help me budget my money. I like to see where I am on my budget at the end of the month, and the breakdown of how much money I have leftover for things like travel and new clothes. It's great because you can see what you need to pay at the end of the month and then see how much your income is for that month so that you can keep track of that. Everything in this planner is in conjunction with the Plum app on my iPhone, so I don't have to worry about forgetting to pay bills or not pay bills.

A finance and budget planner is for people working on saving money for something big, trying to save for retirement, or wanting better control of their finances. Here are some things you might want to track in a finance and budget planner:

  • Money coming in and going out
  • Bills and debt
  • Financial goals
  • Regular expenses
  • Savings goals
  • General savings
  • Building your investment portfolio
  • Setting a budget

Use A Bullet Journal As Your Planner

If you like using a bullet journal, you can use it as your planner as well. Many people do use it for both since you have plenty of calendars and schedule places included.

"What makes the bullet journal so unique is that you can create the type of planner you want. People who tend to do well with bullet journals like to create and modify their planners to fit themselves. Don't let the fancy designs that some people who bullet journal distract you. Bullet journals are meant to be simple and easy to read. There are some excellent journals that are perfect for bullet journaling." (onesmartfro.com)

The Bullet Journal is a clever way to organise your tasks, thoughts and ideas. It's like a notebook that you can take with you everywhere in your life. Many people use it as an organiser in their lives, but it can be much more.

With a bullet journal, you are in complete control of each page, whether you set it up yourself with pen and ruler, or you get printable pages to add to a binder used as your bullet journal. You can be as creative as you want, too. It can be fun!
